Tooth Colored Fillings

Silver amalgam fillings have been a staple of dental care for over 100 years, however there are drawbacks to this type of filling. Aestically they do not match the teeth, and are visible in appearance. There are also health concerns about the mercury content in these fillings. As these fillings age, they start to break down and often affect the enamel structure of the remaining tooth.

In Dr. Tripp's office, no silver amalgam filling are placed. Rather tooth colored, mercury-free restorations are used. While we do not automatically recommend that all silver fillings in a patients mouth be replaced, we do evaluate the condition of existing amalgam fillings, and recommend replacement when signs of amalgam breakdown begins to show, preventing or limiting damage to the surrounding tooth structure.
